Tampa Bay Oculoplastic and Facial Cosmetic Surgeon Opens a New Medical Facility in a Historic South Tampa Building

The legacy of South Tampa is living on with the restoration and preservation of historic homes in our community. Neighborhood associations countywide are doing their best to resurrect neglected and deteriorating homes to not only save our past but also to make sure these buildings make it into our future.

Whether it’s a restaurant, law firm or medical office, historic buildings provide a warm atmosphere that some modern facilities just can’t offer. That was the inspiration that recently drew William P. Mack, M.D. to a distinctive South Tampa colonial style house on West Azeele Street.

One of Tampa Bay’s leading oculoplastic and facial cosmetic surgeons, Dr. Mack has practiced in the Tampa area for over 15 years. He has been featured on News Channel 8 and Fox 13 for his revitalizing cosmetic procedures and eyelid surgeries. His previous office was located in the South Tampa Medical Center since 2007, but it lacked the warm, inviting atmosphere he wanted to accommodate his patient’s needs.

“We didn’t want a traditional office environment,” he said. “Instead, our goal was to find a new location where cosmetic and surgical patients would feel relaxed, comfortable, and welcome.”

The new location provides Dr. Mack with a progressive facility to help his patients achieve a natural and refreshed appearance through various cosmetic techniques.

Home Sweet Home

Dr. Mack and his wife Stephanie started their search for a historic South Tampa home in the spring of 2010. After nearly a year, the couple settled on the 1923 colonial located on the corner of West Azeele Street near MacDill Avenue, a building that for the last 20 years was occupied by the Mangin Financial Group.

They were immediately drawn to the historic site and its classic design and oak tree canopies. The interior had beautiful solid hardwood floors and trim that is impossible to find in a modern home, Dr. Mack said.  “As a bonus, it happened to be located in beautiful South Tampa.”

Finding and planning a massive restoration and renovation of a historic site for the purpose of business doesn’t come without research and analysis. For this, Dr. Mack employed Judah Rubin of Pro-Ject International, a real estate development and construction management firm located on Kennedy Boulevard.

The staff shared their vision of the “ideal office setting” with Rubin, who Dr. Mack says was instrumental in helping him locate the historic building. The next phase was finding a developer who would be able to preserve the ambiance of the site and convert it into a functional, state-of-the-art medical center. For that job, Dr. Mack hired Tom DiGiacomo of Bay Harbor Homes. Permits and variances that would allow a medical facility to operate in this historic location proved to be a challenge.  Due to Dr. Mack’s respected reputation and extensive background in oculoplastic surgery, it was determined that it would be an asset to the neighborhood.

After permitting was passed, Bay Harbor Homes masterfully tackled the chore of preserving the charming character of the building while making it into a premier cosmetic and eyelid surgery center. They built three beautiful exam rooms, a state-of-the-art surgical/procedure room, a comfortable welcoming room, expanded check-in desk, larger employee office space and a separate skincare facility that was converted from a previously vacant guesthouse. The floors were restored to their original condition and the solid wood stairs, banister, handrail and trim were refinished to perfection.

New Beginnings

Officially opened on Oct. 31, 2011, the Mack Center offers patients medical and cosmetic care in a comfortable setting, before, during and after their procedure and a place where Dr. Mack can give them a more youthful appearance to the eyes and face.

A member of the Botox® Cosmetic Physicians Network, Dr. Mack does all of his own Botox® Cosmetic and facial filler treatments and his office also includes a licensed aesthetician and skincare specialist who offers microdermabrasion, TCA peels and other non-invasive procedures that reveal smoother, healthier and more radiant skin.

While the aesthetics of his new facility were certainly the main attraction, Dr. Mack says his staff and patients will benefit from the expanded office space.  In addition,

state-of-the-art improved signage for this historic building will allow increased visibility in the South Tampa community.

“Our practice is growing and the need for more space was definitely our biggest advantage to relocate,” he says. “I’m most proud of our wonderful staff as they have each contributed in unique ways to make this a very smooth transition for our patients.”
